Day 1 - John 13:1

Read John 13:1

John 13:1 is one of the summary statements that John uses in
his gospel. They are guideposts for our
reading through the book and lines that connect the current story with the
broader identity of Christ. Let’s study
the rest of the summary statements.

Read 1:1-5. Connect these sentences to Jesus’ identity and the surrounding
passages.

Read 1:10-14. Connect
these sentences to Jesus’ identity and the surrounding passages.

Read 13:1-5. Connect
these sentences to Jesus’ identity and the surrounding passages.

Read 21:24-25.

Day 2 - John 13:2-11

Read John 13:2-11

Let’s study Judas from John.
Read 13:2, 12:4-6, and 18:2-6.
Write down your comments and observations.

Read Philippians 2:5-11.
Parallel the two passages.

Describe Jesus’ humility.

Why did Jesus say that Peter would not understand what Jesus
was doing until later?

Do you believe Peter’s statements of loyalty? Why or why
not?

Do you believe your own statements of loyalty? Why or why not?

Day 3 - John 13:12-20

Read John 13:12-20

Do you understand what Jesus did for them? For you?

Is Jesus command to wash other people’s feet figurative,
literal, or both?

When was the last time that you washed someone’s feet either
figuratively or literally?

Explain verse 16.

What is something that you can do today to fulfill Jesus’
command in verse 17?

Read Psalm 41:7-9.
Explain how John 12:18, obviously about Judas, can also be demonstrated
in the wickedness of our lives.

How can you be a better messenger for Jesus?

Day 4 - John 13:21-30

Read John 13:21-30

Was Judas the obvious choice to be the betrayer? (Remember he had been entrusted with keeping
the money.)

Who would you think might have been the obvious choice?

Was Judas ultimately the only betrayer?

Who is the disciple that Jesus loved mentioned in verse 23?

What does it mean in verse 27 that Satan entered Judas?

We don’t know John or Peter’s reaction, the only two that
probably knew what Jesus was doing when he handed the bread to Judas. How do you think that they would have
reacted?

Again, was Judas ultimately the only betrayer?

When was a time that you betrayed Jesus?

How did Jesus respond to your betrayal?

Day 5 - John 13:31-38

Read John 13:31-38

Why did Jesus say what He says in verse 31-32 after Judas
had left?

Let’s look at other times in John that Peter shows his
dedication to Jesus. Read 6:66-69,
13:7-9, 13:36-37, and 18:10. Describe
his dedication.

Now let’s look at his betrayal. Read 18:15-18 and 18:25-27. Why did Peter betray Jesus?

Now let’s look at Peter’s restoration. Read 21:15-19. How did Jesus restore Peter?

Look at Peter’s dedication, betrayal, and restoration. How has your life reflected a similar or
different pattern?
