Day 1 - John 12:1-11

  1. Read John 12:1-11
  2. What is the Passover? Read Exodus 12:1-30. Describe the Passover history.
  3. Why did Mary anoint Jesus’ feet? (Contrast this with the previous chapter)
  4. The perfume cost about a year’s wages; 15,000-20,000 dollars by today’s standards. When was the last time that you spent that much on the Kingdom in one sitting?
  5. How would you respond to seeing this? Like Judas?
  6. Explain verse 8.
  7. Why did the Jews want to kill Lazarus? What had he done wrong?
  8. Are you guilty by association with Jesus too?

Day 2 - John 12:12-19

  1. Read John 12:12-19
  2. When the authors of the gospels, Jesus, or even the crowds quote the Old Testament, they are referencing whole passages and ideas. Read Psalm 118:22-29. What do you observe about this passage contrasting it with John 12:12-19?
  3. Read Zechariah 9:9-17. What are the promises in that passage?
  4. Why do you think that the disciples and the crowds did not understand all of this?
  5. Jesus entered the city very popular. These are the same crowds, however, that we will be shouting for His crucifixion soon. How could this crowd that loves Jesus turn on Him in just five days?
  6. How does anyone turn on Jesus that quickly?
  7. Define worship from this passage.

Day 3 - John 12:20-36

  1. Read John 12:20-36
  2. The Greeks, even converts to Judaism, were not allowed in inner temple courts to worship God. Why did the Greeks want to see Jesus?
  3. Does Jesus accept “outsiders”? Who would be the “outsiders” today?
  4. Do you think that the crowds understood what Jesus was saying about His death and resurrection? Why or why not?
  5. Read Matthew 3:13-17. What are the commonalities of what God said at Jesus’ baptism and here in John 12?
  6. Why was God speaking from heaven for the crowds if they did not hear it? (We will deal more with this tomorrow)
  7. Jesus exhorted them to hold to Him as He is the light. He told them that they would not have the light much longer. Do we have the light today? How do we not stumble in the darkness?

Day 4 - John 12:37-43

  1. Read John 12:37-43
  2. Get a mental picture of what you think Jesus looks like. Read Isaiah 52:13-53:12. Describe the Jesus that is pictured in that passage.
  3. Do people’s expectations of Jesus turn them away? What would some of those types of expectations be?
  4. Read Isaiah 6:8-13. Does the message that Isaiah and Jesus preached make sense? Why would God tell them to preach a message for people to not understand? A message that is meant to conceal?
  5. Did the people who already didn’t believe in Jesus accept His miracles? Why or why not?
  6. Explain John 12:43.
  7. Examine your life, is this true about your life too?

Day 5 - John 12:44-50

  1. Read John 12:44-50
  2. How do we tangibly keep the light in our lives and avoid the darkness?
  3. Jesus says that He does not judge those who hear His word and doesn’t believe them. Who is the judge then?
  4. What is Jesus’ key role from this text?
  5. Jesus saw Himself as a conduit for the message of the Father. Do you see yourself as a conduit for the Good News as well? Why or why not?
  6. How do we become a good conduit as Jesus is?
